Rahim connects with Eric as a Milburn family dinner gets seriously awkward. The main purpose of this study was to examine the relations of multiple educational sources on three sexual outcomes on teen sexual knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors.
These include family, media, peers, schools, and professionals. The article reveals that the source of sexual education may not be the most dependable way to try and predict sexual outcomes. Two significant results were found. It was shown to be true that a combination of less education from school and more education from non-family members concerning sexual intercourse was predicted to more frequent sexual behaviors. Also, more education about birth control from family members was predictive to more frequent sexual behaviors.
Results showed that more education about sexual intercourse from peers and professionals predicted more liberal sexual attitudes.
Although this article points out how sexual education is weak in some areas it does state that it does not seem innately correct to conclude based on this whole study that sex education does not matter at all. It goes on to emphasize that the focus should not be placed just on sexual education.
The article concluded with stating that there needs to be more research on this topic. This article provides the research to a start in attempting to adjust the route of research in this area. It found that most likely the most beneficial way to maximally influence young teens on sexual education is to combine all the sources needed. The article is useful because it relates to what I am advocating by encouraging future researchers to continue examining exactly what sources are having the most influence on sexual outcomes.
Once this is concluded a fitting educational program can then be created, implemented and supported. Source: Somers, C. The article investigates the debate on whether or not schools should be teaching sex education or sexual abstinence. The real problem lies with the evaluation of some critics stating that sexual abstinence programs are leaving out major social aspects of sex education. This source is useful to me because the critics argue that sex education programs must be comprehensive which is what I am advocating for.
This includes abstinence education but also includes informative discussions about contraception, sexual orientation, and other controversial subjects that have to do with sex. Source: Stover, D. Education Digest, 72 5 This has been shown to be something very difficult for both parents and educators to deal with.
This article makes my argument stronger because it points out how many parents are unprepared for this responsibility. The article explains parents feel this way because they too were raised without a healthy, informative education on sex and sexuality.
This gives more power to why we should implement a more comprehensive sex education program in schools so we can better our children by making them more knowledgeable. The study goes into showing that programs that only focus on abstinence programs as a way to refrain from sex and to prevent pregnancy and disease. You might not think of yourself as an axe murderer.

Read the sidebar article on church-based sex ed. We opened them up, took them out of their packages and blew them up like balloons.
Then we tossed them around the room. I learned that a condom is just a thing. Or [I thought] that talking about sex is encouraging it. Hearing about students playing with condoms might reinforce their worst fears about frivolous treatment of sexuality in public sex education.
In fact, though sex education makes some people nervous, study after study shows that giving teens information about sex and engaging them in open conversations about issues of sexuality is effective. It helps reduce teen pregnancy and prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. It helps them to analyze their own behavior and sometimes even to critique the culture that gives them bad or misleading information all the time. InDouglas Kirby, a researcher with ETR Associates, a nonprofit consulting firm, reviewed programs nationwide and concluded that comprehensive sex education helps reduce risky sexual behavior and that it is more effective than abstinence-only education—an approach in which methods of birth control besides abstinence are not mentioned let alone played with.
But it also found that teenagers who had had an abstinence-only education were not more likely to have unprotected sex, as some critics had claimed. A sort of schizophrenia seems to lie at the heart of American approaches to sexuality. On the one hand, movies, TV shows and advertisements are drenched in references to sexuality, and children encounter sexual messages at a very early age.
On the other hand, many Americans are deeply anxious about addressing sexuality in public settings. In situations where genuine information rather than provocative advertisements might be useful, many people prefer to change the subject. The fear of controversy has prohibited many school districts across the country from implementing any kind of comprehensive sexual education program.
But support for comprehensive education may be gaining ground. Hauser said that demand for these standards far surpassed her expectations. There is a hunger and a thirst to do better by our kids. That epidemic created a sense of urgency around sex education that led to the widespread acceptance of basic HIV prevention curricula in many states.
A movement for abstinence-only education arose in the s, and Congress responded by providing federal funding only to programs that adhered to that approach. However, Congress in reinserted Title V funds for abstinence-only education.
PREP funding requires teaching about both abstinence and other methods of birth control. PREP also does not require state matching funds, and for this reason alone states find it attractive. But the wars over sex education are far from over. The announcement last summer that New York City will require sex education was met with an uproar from religious and political groups that want to keep it out of the schools entirely.
